The Main Methodological Characteristics of the Dissertation Research

Planning, organizing and conducting any research involves determining the most effective methods that will allow you to deeply study the topic and adequately present the results. It is on the methodology that depends on the consistency and effectiveness of the actions taken by the author, the final result and its accuracy, steadfastness.

Each study is unique. Therefore, the author should approach the selection of tools and methods of work with special attention. Today we will talk about the most popular techniques used in scientific research.

What is a dissertation research methodology?

The set of techniques and tools used by the author of a scientific work to achieve the intended goal and obtain the most effective results is called the methodological apparatus. This “unit” is present in any project, regardless of the field of science, industry, subject, mission, etc. The method is a method of collecting and processing information, a variant of conducting an experiment that allows you to establish a particular pattern, identify advantages and disadvantages, and solve a specific issue.

The methodology of scientific work is designed to concretize the actions of the researcher, help him understand the situation and make a worthy decision in order to optimize it. This criterion is briefly described in the introduction of the dissertation, and then traced (more precisely, used) throughout the study. Thanks to the right tools and principles, the author manages to achieve success and demonstrate his professionalism.

How and where to emphasize the methodology of the dissertation?

As we noted above, the initial mention of the methods and tools used in the dissertation is given in the introductory part. Here, the author briefly and succinctly notes what he used and was guided by when carrying out a scientific project. Small hints and examples can be found in melodic recommendations, from the supervisor, or in examples of previously defended projects.

Most often, the description of the methodological apparatus is reduced to a banal enumeration of the implemented techniques. The justification for expediency and effectiveness is given in the conclusion of the dissertation when describing the results obtained, the results of approbation and the author's recommendations.

Please note that in the introduction the author describes exactly what he did, and in the conclusion - what he got as a result of the actions taken. That is, in the first case, the connection "method - action" should be traced, and in the latter - "method (or action) - result".

You can also find a description of the methodological unit of the dissertation work in the abstract. It is produced similarly to the fragment from the introduction. Moreover, graduate students often simply copy part of the introduction (separate fragments) into the “General characteristics of the dissertation” section of the abstract.

1-2 paragraphs are allotted for writing the dissertation methodological unit. When choosing research methods, it is important to have an idea about each of them, the features and possibilities of their use, taking into account the approved topic. Do not be afraid to improvise and combine techniques that are “incongruous” at first sight. The author of the dissertation must offer a radically new solution to the problem, so he needs to competently arrange tools and moves, calculate each option and choose the most effective, appropriate option. So he will be able not only to correctly select the tools, achieve the intended goal, but also justify his position.
